Doc Pomus’ tale is one of music’s great untold stories. Paralyzed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself as a blues singer, going by the name Doc Pomus, and emerged as one of the most brilliant songwriters of the early rock and roll era, writing “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and dozens of other hits.
Doc’s tale of disability and possibility is told through incomparable music, rare archival footage, and interviews with collaborators and friends including Dr. John, Ben E King, Joan Osborne, Dion, Leiber and Stoller, along with Lou Reed, who reads from Doc’s private journals.

Presented by SHALOM SABAR, Professor of Jewish Art and Folklore, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Shalom Sabar is a Professor of Jewish Art and Folklore at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Professor Sabar earned his Ph.D. in Art History from UCLA , writing on the illustrated marriage contracts of the Jews in Renaissance and Baroque Italy.
His research unites the disciplines of art history and folklore. It highlights issues pertaining to the folk nature of Jewish art and Jewish material culture, visual materials and objects associated with rituals in the life and year cycles, and the evidence these materials provide about the relationships between the Jewish minorities and the societies that hosted them in Christian Europe and the Islamic East.

Barry Edelstein was recently named the Artistic Director of the Old Globe. Before that, he was the Director of the Shakespeare Initiative at New York City's Public Theater. In this capacity he oversaw all of the company's Shakespearean productions, including its famous Shakespeare in the Park series in Central Park, as well as The Public's extensive educational, community outreach and artist-training programs. He was Associate Producer of The Public's recent Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino.
Barry will be joined by a special guest to discuss the social and historical controversies surrounding Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, which will be part of the Globe's summer Shakespeare Festival this year.

The Montana Human Rights Network acquired 4,000 volumes of white supremacist propaganda from a defecting official of the World Church of the Creator and approached the Holter Museum with the idea to use the books to create art for a meaningful and transformative exhibition. More than 100 artists contributed to this astonishing and moving show, resulting in sculpture, video, painting, photography, collage, printmaking, book arts, beadwork, fiber and performance pieces. The exhibit is not only thought-provoking and insightful, but it opens the way for turning dark into light.
