San Diego Jewish Book Fair Begins a New Chapter filled with Ideas, Inspiration, and Imagination

The 23rd Annual San Diego Jewish Book Fair is getting a makeover thanks to the vision of its co-chairs, Sarah Scott Feldman and Julie Potiker, and the new Festivals Program Director, Brian Garrick.  This year’s event, traditionally held in November over 10 consecutive days, will now offer year-round author-inspired programs in both North County and La Jolla.  Garrick explains that the flagship multi-day festival is moving to the spring to help cultural arts patrons avoid “calendar competition” with the many Jewish and secular holidays occurring in the fall.  The Book Fair program will continue to highlight well-known authors and eminent thought-leaders -- bloggers, journalists and podcasters -- who, not only have written books, but are making their mark in new and emerging media.  We want to be open to all possibilities – even those that haven’t yet been invented,” adds Garrick.

It’s no secret that the world of books and publishing is changing every day.  The number of book fairs and festivals has diminished over time, as have most brick and mortar bookstores. “Yet our appetite for information and great stories seems insatiable,” assures Garrick. “The San Diego Center for Jewish Culture is honored to continue its commitment to Jewish authors, content, values, and history as it reinvents this beloved community tradition into a sleeker, more eclectic and more diverse festival.” Garrick stresses, “We will never lose sight of our history, or heritage, but know that the way we consume and access books and ideas is incredibly dynamic.  Our goal as we turn the page on a brand new book fair is to create live, interactive experiences for all types of audiences.”

Many Jewish book fairs are held in November in conjunction with National Jewish Book Month, an ongoing tribute to Jewish authors and literacy sponsored by the Jewish Book Council. Garrick confirms that the San Diego Jewish Book Fair will continue to be part of this national celebration in November by hosting a single, distinct event with a celebrity author at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS.  This author will be announced shortly. The San Diego Jewish Book Fair will also expand its Foodies on the Farm full-day, multi-author experience at Leichtag Commons in Encinitas. This popular event will feature cooking demos, tastings, culinary conversations and renowned cookbook authors thanks to the generous support from Coastal Roots Farm and Leichtag Foundation. This year Foodies on the Farm is scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 2017.

Ticket information for all Book Fair related events will be available within the next few weeks through the JCC Box Office: 858-362-1348
