Shmata Nouveau: Textiles Through the Wringer
September 7-October 29,2006
The Jewish connection with textiles
is ancient, rooted in ceremonial cloths and religious garments, blossoming into
the clothing and fashion industry. Shmata, literally "rags" in
Yiddish, recognizes the humble beginnings that allowed tailors and designers to
create livelihoods from textiles. Shmata Nouveau investigates this rich
context and examines how these histories are embraced by contemporary artists Carol
Hamoy, Debra Olin and Miriam Shaer.
