DRINK, HE SAID
“Drink”, he said, “don’t drowse,
drink wine aged well in barrels,
near henna beds and aloes
and roses mixed with myrrh-

In pomegranate groves
by grapevines and date palms,
with tender plants and saplings,
and tamarisks in rows.”

November 30, 2009
The Young Verdi and Early Nineteenth Century Italian Opera
December 8, 2009
Verdi’s Nabucco: A Composer’s First Success

As we look forward to San Diego Opera’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, Dr. Nicolas Reveles, the Geisel Director of Education and Outreach for San Diego Opera, will explore the cultural and musical influences on the composer when he wrote this great masterpiece. Based loosely on biblical references, Nabucco is set during the time of the Babylonian Exile of the Jews by Nebuchadnezzar II (Nabucco), the Assyrian King. As you will discover, this 1842 opera showed Verdi as a distinct new voice in Italian opera, a voice not entirely welcomed by lovers of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. Learn about the sometimes bizarre traditions of opera-going in 19th century Italy, the circumstances of the premiere at La Scala and the political ramifications of that first production. Dr. Reveles will accompany these lectures with generous audio-visual examples from Verdi’s works, as well as with his usually witty and at times irreverent approach to the world of opera!
Co-sponsored by the San Diego Opera with
Dr. Nicolas Reveles, the Geisel Director of Education and Outreach.

Ardyn Halter's series of paintings and print, entitled The Family I Never Knew addresses the Shoah from the point of view of the second generation and, also, all those who were born after the Shoah. The series grapples, in visual terms, with the shortcomings of the sympathetic imagination – the mind that seeks to understand the Shoah yet which, at the same time, is conscious of the impossibility of such a task, and doubtful of the enterprise. No violence is shown in these works, only images formed from fragments of photographs, placed within the context of the anti-Semitic slogans employed by the Nazis. Effectively, these works convey the sense of a space, a chasm between the viewer and the subject. They challenge the viewer to reassess his or her own responses and assumptions.

Jacob Goldberg Annual Lectures
Lectures on Israel: New American and Israeli Government—Challenges and Opportunities
2010 is going to be a critical year in Middle East politics in three areas:

  • Iran's nuclear drive will reach a point-of-no-return, forcing the US, the EU and Israel to face a moment of truth.
  • The Israeli-Palestinian peace process is to be revived, forcing both sides to make "painful decisions."
  • Syria would have to choose between its alliance with Iran and support of terrorism or joining the peace process. The answer would also shape the future course of Lebanon.

While these take shape, disagreements will surface between the new governments in the US and  Israel. Will the two leaderships be able to cope with the multitude of challenges and opportunities?
